Geely MK becomes Australia’s cheapest car at $8999 driveaway

The Geely MK is currently available from $8999 driveaway, making it the cheapest new car on the market.

John Hughes Geely in Perth is advertising the discounted pricing on the small Chinese sedan as part of a driveaway campaign offer that has been running through July and is expected to continue into August, according to a member of the dealership’s sales team.

The $8999 driveaway offer on the Geely MK undercuts the $9990 driveaway price tag of its compatriot, the city-sized Chery J1.

The dealership’s website explains the offer applies to 2011 model year vehicles built in 2013. The dealership says stock is readily available, with customers able to select between red, white, black and silver paint colours.

Hughes’ Chinese Automotive Distributors introduced the Geely MK to Australia in 2011 with an initial driveaway price of $11,990.

The MK has only ever been sold in WA, with its lack of electronic stability control excluding it from being offered in other states across the country.

The Geely MK pairs a 69kW/123Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a five-speed manual transmission for combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.8 litres per 100km and 0-100km/h in a claimed 15.9 seconds.

The MK comes with 15-inch alloy wheels and rear parking sensors, though managed just a three-star ANCAP safety rating in 2011, featuring only ABS, EDB and two front airbags.
