BMW i DC Fast Charger revealed : First-ever wall unit smaller, cheaper than rival systems

Developed in collaboration with Bosch Automotive Service Solutions, the new BMW i DC Fast Charger claims to be the first of its kind that is small enough and light enough to be mounted to a wall.

Unlike conventional DC fast chargers, which are about the size of a standard refrigerator and can weigh more than 680kg, BMW’s Fast Charger measures 79cm high, 48cm wide and 30cm deep and weighs approximately 45kg.

BMW has also priced its Fast Charger at US$6548 ($6970), less than one quarter of the cost of many existing units from rival providers.

BMW claims its DC Fast Charger can recharge the lithium-ion battery of an all-electric i3 from empty to 80 per cent in 30 minutes, matching the performance of existing fast chargers. BMW claims a 190km range for the i3.

BMW’s charging unit uses the standardised SAE combo plug, compatible with all existing and future plug-in hybrids and EVs from BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen. Rival Tesla’s fast-charging units, including its Supercharger network that claims to provide up to 270km of range from a 30-minute charge, are compatible exclusively with Tesla vehicles.

The first BMW i DC Fast Chargers will be sold to BMW dealers in the US in August before being made available to third-party companies.
