The updated Renault Megane range has seen the addition of a new warm- to hot-hatch variant, the GT 220.

Previously offered as a limited edition five-door GT 220 station wagon, Renault has now added a five-door hatchback version alongside the wagon model as part of the standard Megane model range.

The GT 220 variants are both designed with performance in mind, with the models using the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as is seen in the three-door RS265 hot-hatch.

The engine has been detuned, however, dropping from 195kW to a Volkswagen Golf GTI-equalling 162kW of power that  (or 220 horsepower, hence the name). Torque is rated at 340Nm.

Renault claims the hatch and wagon can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.6 seconds, while fuel use is rated at 7.3 litres per 100km. The GT 220 models are only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Renault claims it considers the rivals to the new GT 220 hatch to be the aforementioned VW hot-hatch, along with the Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo, Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Citroen DS4 D-Sport.

Renault says the GT 220 models feature a stiffened suspension and improved centre of gravity, while the car is distinguishable from the outside by its unique front and rear bumpers, badging, grey mirrors and door handles and silver 18-inch alloy wheels (with Dunlop Sport Maxx tread).

There are two trim levels available for the GT 220 models – with the range-topping Premium versions offering more kit. See the specification breakdown below.
