Restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles powered by the Japanese car maker’s 110kW/360Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, the official recall notice on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) product safety recalls website says the fault is the result of improper machining of the SUVs’ transfer case covers.
According to the notice, the machining issue “may result in oil seal displacement, allowing [automatic] transmission fluid (ATF) to escape”.
“As a result of transmission fluid loss, the ATF pressure may drop, the gear shift may fail, warning lamps may illuminate and in the worst case, the vehicle may become immobile without warning,” the notice says.
Mitsubishi Motors Australia product communications manager John Taylor told CarAdvice the recall is a precautionary measure with the problem so far discovered in "less than 10 [vehicles] at this stage”.
Taylor said owners are being notified of the recall by mail, with inspections to be followed by the replacement of the transfer unit, if the condition is identified. If required, the replacement should take approximately four hours to be completed.
Starting at $31,990 for the ASX and $39,490 for the Outlander, the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel is currently only available in the higher spec LS and XLS and LS and Aspire variants respectively.
