2014 Mini One Hatch: Pricing and specifications

There's a new budget-friendly base model Mini: the new Mini One Hatch is arriving in Australian showrooms now, priced from $24,500.

That price positions the new Mini One Hatch as the cheapest car the brand has sold in Australia under BMW's guidance, undercutting the previous-generation Mini Ray which sold for $25,800 plus on-road costs. Mini Australia claims the new One "delivers more power, greater economy, more sophistication and a higher level of specification" despite the lower cost of entry.

The new Mini One Hatch is powered by a 1.2-litre version of the brand's new three-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 75kW of power and 180Nm of torque. It is mated to a standard six-speed manual, while a six-speed automatic is available as an option (priced at $2350).

Fuel use for the One is rated at 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres for the manual and 5.0L/100km for the auto - up slightly on the Cooper three-cylinder model's 1.5-litre engine (with 100kW/220Nm), which uses a claimed 4.7L in manual guise and 4.9L for the auto. The engine is fitted with stop-start.

The Mini One's equipment list includes Bluetooth phone connectivity (but no audio streaming), USB input, keyless entry, stability and traction control and six airbags.

Compared to the Mini Cooper, the One has 15-inch steel wheels with Mini wheel covers (Cooper has 15-inch alloys), a two-spoke steering wheel (Cooper has three spokes with audio and cruise controls), and it lacks the "Storage Compartment Package" which is understood to consist of a central console. It also misses out on rain-sensing wipers and auto headlights.

As with the regular Mini range, the car has grown in all directions, including the boot - it jumps to 211 litres from 160L in the previous model.

Mini Australia general manager Kai Brusewitz said the new model will give buyers an alternative to more mainstream small cars.

“The improved performance, higher levels of sophistication and equipment levels as well as the attractive price will ensure the exciting Mini brand is on the shopping list of more Aussie customers”, said Brueszewitz.

Mini Hatch line-up (prices plus on-road costs, manual models listed):
Mini One                     $24,500
Mini Cooper                $26,650
Mini Cooper D             $31,800
