Aston Martin DP-100: A virtual supercar concept for Gran Turismo

The Aston Martin DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo is the latest in a string of concept cars to be created specifically for the popular PlayStation title Gran Turismo.

Although there's a full-size model on display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, it's far from drivable. For players of Gran Turismo 6, the DP-100 can punted around virtually from July when it becomes available for download.

In the game the DP-100 is powered by a 597kW twin-turbocharged V12 mounted behind the driver and passenger. No word yet on how many gears the transmission is equipped with or whether the DP-100 is an all-wheel drive affair.

Aston Martin hints that some of the design details featured on the DP-100, which incidentally stands for Design Prototype 100, may eventually work their way into future road cars.

The bladed LED taillights, which Aston Martin describes as being "piercing bolts of light", and the vented front and rear wheel arches are two of the more likely prospects.

Further down the chain of probability are details like the swan-wing doors and the active blades on the alloy wheels, which open and close automatically to either aid aerodynamic efficiency or improve brake cooling.

Previous Vision Gran Turismo concept cars include flights of fancy, such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo, Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo and Mitsubishi XR-PHEV.

Some, though, may actually give clues towards a future production car. For example, the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo is rumoured to share some elements with the next generation Nissan GT-R.
