Toyota recalls 19,600 Corolla, Avensis Verso, Lexus SC430 vehicles a second time

Almost 20,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles recalled last year over an airbag defect will be forced back to dealerships to have the issue addressed a second time.

Toyota Australia says the issue affects approximately 19,600 Toyota Corolla and Avensis Verso and Lexus SC430 models produced between January 2001 and May 2003.

Toyota recalled the vehicles in April last year after discovering the front passenger airbag may have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers.

The original recall notice explained that in the event of a crash “the inflator may rupture and cause the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant”.

Toyota says only a small number of vehicles recalled last year had their airbag inflators replaced, though the updated repair process will see the front passenger airbag inflator replaced in all affected vehicles.

Customers that had the part replaced under last year’s recall will not be required to take their cars back to dealerships this year.

Affected customers will be notified by mail and asked to make an appointment at their Toyota dealership when parts become available.

The airbag inflator will be replaced free of charge and will take between one and 2.5 hours for Toyota vehicles and about 5.5 hours for Lexus models.
