Mini Cooper SD revealed as brand’s quickest diesel model yet

The new Mini Cooper SD has been revealed, promising to be the fastest diesel-powered hatch the BMW-owned brand has ever offered.

The all-new Mini Cooper hatchback's flagship diesel model is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged oil-burner, with 125kW of power and 360Nm of torque from 1500rpm. With that much punch, the Mini Cooper SD can sprint from 0-100km/h in as little as 7.2 seconds for the six-speed automatic and 7.3sec for the six-speed manual. Despite its pushy power delivery, the Cooper SD auto uses a claimed 4.0 litres per 100km on the combined cycle, while the manual uses 4.1L/100km.

In terms of styling, the Cooper SD deceptively wears an 'S' badge on its grille but a rear 'SD' badge, and mimics the petrol hot-hatch with a bonnet scoop, large fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels and a sporty rear bumper with twin central tailpipes.

Mini Australia general manager of corporate communications Lenore Fletcher told CarAdvice there is no confirmation for the Mini Cooper SD for a local launch at this point, but suggested the nation's love of performance cars could be enough to get it over the line. If it does make it to Australia, it would sit above the $31,800 Mini Cooper D, which is powered by a three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo diesel producing 100kW/220Nm.

Mini Australia has only offered the SD (Super Diesel) variant in the Countryman compact SUV - never before has it been seen in the hatchback range.
