Hyundai Veloster RM Concept:: rear-drive, 2.0-litre turbo – UPDATED with new images

The Hyundai Veloster RM Concept pushes the South Korean small sporty hatchback to a new level.

New images of the Veloster RM show car have been released following its debut in South Korea yesterday. There's still little in the way of information about the car, but we know it features two seats and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mounted behind the occupants and within the car's wheelbase - and also that the car has been fettled with by the team that built the Hyundai i20 WRC car.

Uncovered at the 2014 Busan motor show, the racy new RM (Rear Mid) concept car is plastered with RM stickers across its side, though its most eye-catching feature is its engine - or, more precisely, where the engine is placed. The braced 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder Theta direct injection unit produces 220kW of power which is sent to the rear wheels, and its midship layout is said to "offer ideal weight distribution and handling balance through corners".

Other changes implemented by Hyundai's High Performance Team compared with the standard Veloster include lightweight aluminium suspension and a strengthened chassis for the "mini-supercar". To us, its enormous rear splitter looks similar to the iconic Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak challenger.

The South Korean company says the car is "fully driveable" and that it boasts the latest in Hyundai's performance tech. But there's some bad news.

"The Midship is a concept only to explore possibilities for the Veloster chassis and is currently not related to any future production model," a release from the company said.
