Volkswagen Tiguan :: new-generation model to be unveiled this year – report

The next-generation Volkswagen Tiguan compact SUV is set to be unveiled later this year, according to a report from Germany's Auto Motor Und Sport.

The new model is said to debut in the European autumn of 2014, meaning it could debut at the Paris motor show in October. It will reportedly grow in size to about 4500mm long (the current car is 4427mm), which should allow its rear-seat space to rise and its boot capacity to increase markedly over the current model's 395 litres.

As with the current Golf, the second-generation Tiguan will be built upon the company's new modular transverse matrix (MQB) underpinnings. As CarAdvice has previously reported, it is set to be offered in three bodystyles - the standard five-seat model, an extended seven-seat version (measuring about 4990mm - lengthier than the current Touareg), and a more style-focused coupe-inspired model.

Engines will likely mirror the Golf range, with a 1.4-litre petrol turbo four-cylinder the mainstay of the range alongside a 1.4-litre three-cylinder turbo diesel (as is seen in the European market VW Polo) and larger 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel.

Volkswagen is also said to be planning an international launch of two new smaller SUVs to slot below the Tiguan. The Taigun baby SUV model, which is based on the Up! micro car, will reportedly launch in 2015, while a slightly larger model based on the T-Roc concept will debut in 2016.
