Peugeot 1008 three-door baby SUV rumoured

Speculation abounds that there could soon be a new Peugeot 1008 SUV - an aggressively styled three-door crossover that would slot below the current Peugeot 2008.

AutoExpress reports the French brand is considering building a new baby high-rider that will be based on the current 2008 five-door compact SUV, but measure about 3900mm in length - roughly 300mm shorter than the brand's current smallest SUV.

The report suggests the car will feature similar stepped headlights and C-shaped tail-lights to its bigger brother, but with a shorter roofline reminiscent of the 208 hatchback - and a lack of roof rails. The car pictured here is the brand's HR1 concept, which presaged the 2008 but clearly hinted towards a three-door SUV.

Under the bonnet it is expected to be offered with a range of engines including the company's new 1.0-litre three-cylinder powerplants as seen in the 108 micro car, with about 50kW of power. A more powerful turbocharged three-cylinder is also rumoured.

While the name is not confirmed, Peugeot may brand the car the 1008 or possibly the 2008 RX, according to the report.

The car is said to go on sale by around June of 2016.
