anniversary limited edition will become the most powerful production car in the brand’s history when it’s unleashed later this year.

Revealed today after early details leaked yesterday, the ’30 Jahre M5’ (30 years of the M5) will produce 441kW of power and 700Nm of torque from its uprated 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 – up 18kW/20Nm from the Competition Package-equipped M5 as is sold as standard in Australia.

The power boost is achieved through tweaks to the engine management and an increase in charge pressure, which BMW says contribute to the 30 Jahre M5 accelerating from 0-100km/h 0.3 seconds quicker than the regular model, stopping the clock in just 3.9 seconds - the same sprint time Audi's RS7 Sportback claims.

The limited edition model comes standard with the Competition Package, which adds firmer springs and dampers and a 10mm lower ride height, and adjustments to the active M differential, steering and stability control.

BMW will build just 300 special edition 30 Jahre M5s, and BMW Australia has secured 15 for local customers. To be built between July and November, the first examples are tipped to arrive before the end of 2014 commanding a small premium over the standard car’s $229,900 asking price.

All BMW 30 Jahre M5 models will be finished with Frozen Dark Silver metallic matt paint. The grille surrounds, side gills with ’30 Jahre M5’ badges, door handle inserts and twin exhaust outlets are all finished in black, while 20-inch M light-alloy wheels complete the exterior enhancements.

Special edition badging extends to the cabin, embracing the front door sills and passenger-side dashboard trim strip, while all four backrests feature ‘30 Jahre M5’ embroidery. The seats are trimmed with leather and alcantara upholstery, with alcantara also used across the steering wheel, centre console and door panels.

Customers can also select between two 16-speaker audio systems: a 600-watt Harman Kardon unit and a 1200-watt Bang & Olufsen surround sound system.
