Suzuki Alivio concept :: Australian arm keen for new small sedan

The Suzuki Alivio concept sedan has been revealed at the 2014 Beijing auto show, pointing the way to a production small sedan to sit alongside the S-Cross high-riding hatch.

The Suzuki Alivio concept was revealed by Suzuki China, and that arm of the company says the new model has been designed to be "sporty and noble". The car features some similarities to the S-Cross SUV, though the sedan's more streamlined front-end treatment with a solid bar grille and sculpted headlights arguably looks more attractive than its droopy-nosed sibling.

The Alivio Concept is similar in size to small sedans such as the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra, measuring 4.54 metres long, 1.73m wide and 1.47m tall.

The Alivio Concept is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, and some markets will see the option of a 1.3-litre turbo diesel or a 1.4-litre petrol. Suzuki claims the vehicle's engineers sat in the driver's seat and the rear seat to ensure good levels of comfort and stability for all occupants.

Suzuki Australia communications manager Andrew Ellis told CarAdvice that the new sedan is on the wanted list for Australia, despite being sold in developing markets in the first instance.

"At the moment it's only for China and India," he said. "If something like that became available to us, of course we'd be interested."

Suzuki previously sold the SX4 sedan, though that car hasn't been on sale since 2012. The brand recently cut prices of its S-Cross hatch-cum-SUV after a slow start to 2014 sales.
