Hyundai ix25 :: baby SUV leaked ahead of Beijing reveal

An official image of the Hyundai ix25 has allegedly been leaked ahead of the sub-compact SUV's debut at next week's 2014 Beijing motor show.

Published by Italian site jokeforblog, the Hyundai ix25 – its name is still to be officially confirmed – takes styling cues from its larger SUV siblings, the full-size Sante Fe and compact ix35, appearing more conservative than the aggressively styled hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hyundai Intrado concept revealed in Geneva last month.

Spied undergoing winter testing in February, and again last month (pictured below), the leaked image confirms the i20-based Hyundai ix25 will feature wrap-around headlights, a hexagonal grille, circular front fog lights and protective underbody panels.

Though details remain scarce, the ix25 engine line-up is anticipated to include 1.2- and 1.4-litre petrol units and a 1.4-litre turbo-diesel. Larger 1.6- and 2.0-litre engines are also rumoured to feature under the bonnet, along with optional four-wheel-drive underpinnings.

The ix25 is expected to be built and sold in China as part of a joint venture between the South Korean car maker and Chinese partner BAIC.

Hyundai Australia is yet to announce any plans to bring the model to local shores, however, expansion is likely given comments made by the company’s European president Allan Rushforth at last month’s Geneva motor show.

Speaking with CarAdvice, Rushforth said the introduction of a sub-compact SUV was “absolutely” vital to the car maker’s goal of growing its market share, particularly in Europe.

The 2014 Beijing motor show begins on April 21.
