Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept to debut at New York auto show

The new-generation Land Rover Discovery will debut in concept guise at the New York auto show later this month.

Land Rover has revealed a teaser image and video of its new Discovery Vision concept car, giving a little more away in terms of the car's design and its interior.

It is clear the new model will feature the iconic stepped roofline of its Discovery predecessors, though via a far more dynamic design including a sweeping windscreen, less bluff front-end treatment and prominent rear pillar.

Inside, the car is expected to feature a flexible seating layout with three individual seats in the second row and two in the third row, while the company's rotary dial pop-up gear selector will also appear.

The Discovery Vision concept car is said to "showcase the essence of a future family of SUVs built on Land Rover’s key principles of emotive design, unrivalled capability and ultimate versatility, taken to new levels using new customer-focused advanced technologies".

The company has previously hinted that the Discovery name will be applied to a new line of models, including a smaller SUV that will likely see the Freelander name killed off, possibly in favour of the Discovery Sport badge (to mirror the differences between the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models). Land Rover design director and chief creative officer Gerry McGovern said the new car is about appealing to buyers emotions as well as their practical wants.

"Discovery has been pivotal in helping to build the foundations of the Land Rover brand. It is admired all over the world and loved by its strong customer base," he said. "We have created the Vision Concept to share the essence of Land Rover’s new age of Discovery and to debut a new, compelling, relevant design direction that connects on an emotional level with customers of today and tomorrow."
