Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe : Sub-4.0sec S-Class revealed
The Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe has become the first member of the S-Class family to break the 4.0-second 0-100km/h acceleration barrier.
Unveiled overnight ahead of its New York motor show debut next month, the all-wheel-drive S63 AMG Coupe claims to sprint to triple figures from rest in 3.9 seconds, shaving 0.1sec of the previous benchmark held by its S63 AMG sedan sibling.
Australian customers will miss out on the quickest variant, however, with 4Matic models only available in left-hand drive.
Mercedes-Benz Australia will instead introduce the rear-wheel-drive S63 AMG Coupe to our market in the first quarter of 2015, which stops the clock at a still-impressive 4.3 seconds.
Both are powered by an identical engine to the one in the S63 AMG sedan: an uprated twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 producing 430kW at 5500rpm and 900Nm between 2250-3750rpm, which gains 30kW and 100Nm over the CL63 AMG it replaces.
Mercedes-Benz claims combined cycle fuel consumption of 10.1 litres per 100km for the new rear-drive model, down five per cent compared with its predecessor.
Both rear- and all-wheel-drive variants are said to be 65kg lighter than the old model, weighing an identical 1995kg each. The rear-drive model comes standard with Magic Body Control suspension with Road Surface Scan technology, while the all-paw variant features AirMatic air suspension with ADS Plus adaptive damping system.
Like the Mercedes-Benz S500 Coupe that debuted in Geneva earlier this month, the S63 AMG Coupe is equipped with the world-first curve tilting function, which claims to allow the car to lean into bends like a motorcyclist or a skier to reduce the lateral acceleration on occupants and help them sit more firmly.
Signature Affalterbach styling features distinguish the S63 AMG Coupe from the S500. The front gains a twin-blade radiator grille, ‘A-wing’ lower front splitter, ‘V8 BITURBO’ badging, and quad exhaust outlets in a high-gloss black rear diffuser.
Standard 19-inch titanium grey alloy wheels can be replaced by optional 20s, while an AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is also available as an option for the first time.
Specific AMG interior enhancements include newly developed sports seats with nappa leather, AMG badges on the backrests and centre console armrest, three-spoke sports steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles, and an AMG instrument cluster with high-resolution colour display and 330km/h speedometer.
Australian pricing and specifications for the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe will be revealed closer to its early-2015 launch, though it’s expected to come in close to the $422,445 price tag of the outgoing CL63 AMG.
