Mercedes-Benz engineers to take over development of Infiniti Q30

Mercedes-Benz engineers will take over responsibility for the development of the Infiniti Q30 as the luxury Japanese car maker attempts to rush its premium hatchback to the market.

Autocar reports Infiniti's decision to effectively outsource the new compact model’s engineering will cut its development time in half, reducing the time from design completion to production start to just 18 months.

“This is a quick program and Infiniti needs a new model in Europe fast,” company president Johan de Nysschen was quoted as saying at the Geneva motor show.

“We will set the specifications and parameters and Mercedes will engineer the car. It is their platform.”

Previewed in concept form at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show last September, the Infiniti Q30 will share its front- or all-wheel-drive ‘MFA’ platform with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and will also inherit a number of the German small car’s turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

The Infiniti Q30 will be produced in a new facility at parent company Nissan’s assembly plant in Sunderland, UK from 2015.

Infiniti Australia general manager Campbell York told CarAdvice last month the Q30 and its crossover sibling, the as-yet-unseen Infiniti QX30, would both be available in our market by 2017, with the hatch tipped to arrive in 2016.
