Toyota Corolla sedan, Subaru WRX, Peugeot 5008 earn five-star ANCAP safety ratings

The Toyota Corolla sedan, Subaru WRX and Peugeot 5008 have all been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent crash-tester ANCAP.

The Peugeot 5008 became the highest-scoring people-mover ever tested by ANCAP, scoring 36.41 points out of a possible 37, dethroning the previously top-ranked Kia Rondo (36.2).

Available in Australia since May, the seven-seat French van features seatbelt reminders for all occupants and curtain airbags that extend to the third row.

Arriving later this month, the all-new Subaru WRX scored 35.85 points and joined a small group of vehicles to attain the top ‘good’ rating for pedestrian safety, while the recently launched Toyota Corolla sedan tallied 34.88 points, falling slightly short of the Corolla hatch’s 35.25 but still easily qualifying for the maximum star rating.

ANCAP chairman Lauchlan McIntosh praised Peugeot, Subaru and Toyota for their top safety achievements.

He also took the opportunity, however, to encourage manufacturers to push forward with the introduction of autonomous emergency braking technology – a feature offered by none of the tested trio but one that is becoming increasingly common in Europe and the US.
