Mercedes Me : online ownership system can find your car, check your fuel

A new Mercedes-Benz ownership initiative will allow owners to find their car, check whether the doors are locked, turn on the heating or see how much fuel they have left in the tank – all using a smartphone.

Mercedes Me was launched at this week’s Geneva motor show as a new sub-brand that brings all the company’s current and future services into a single online utility for owners.

It launches in Europe mid year in German and English and will eventually be rolled out globally to other markets including Australia.

The new online services portal is divided into five pillars of content: Move Me, Connect Me, Assist Me, Finance Me and Inspire Me. Owners access them after registering and obtained their own ID.

Connect Me links owners to their vehicle wherever they are, with a ‘Remote online’ function able to remind them where the car has been parked, check the doors having been left unlocked or assess the fuel level. Connectivity services also include maintenance and breakdown management as well as emergency call system and telediagnosis.

Whether you’re a Mercedes-Benz owner or not, Move Me can help for those times when a customer is without a car – booking or finding taxis, chauffeur services or rental cars.

Assist Me provides owners with 24-7 ability to arrange servicing appointments and calculate servicing costs.

Finance Me deals with financial, leasing and insurance options, while Inspire Me is designed to keep owners up to date with developments in the Mercedes world and enable customers to offer feedback and ideas.

Mercedes-Benz says while Mercedes Me has been created to simplify the ownership experience in a single online environment, the company’s servicing centres will continue to play an important role with the personal touch.

“This is a new way of opening up communication with customers,” said the company’s director for service and parts business passenger cars, Christian Treiber, “[but] the service business is a people business. People still want to talk to someone.”

“The key is to have as much data [about the owner and their vehicles] in as relevant to the site [to get the most out of it.”

Treiber said no date had been set yet for the launch of Mercedes Me in Australia but added the “goal is to get it worldwide”.
