Mercedes-Benz S-Class Maybach : surprise badge return for Rolls challenger

The Maybach name may have been axed as a brand after more than a decade of losses but it will be revived as a badge for a Mercedes-Benz S-Class designed to take on Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Mercedes-Benz had been expected to dip into its limousine history and use the Pullman name for the pinnacle of the company’s flagship, though the S-Class’s chief engineer told Australian media it would instead be Maybach.

Asked about the six variations of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class that have yet to all be confirmed, Dr Hermann-Joseph Storp said the Pullman name might still be used for an armoured version.

“We have the short version, the long version we’ve launched already, and then there will have the next longer version and that will get in addition the name S-Class Maybach.

“You will see the coupe, so guess there will be a highly protected car, such as Pullman.”

Dr Storp said Mercedes decided to reintroduce the Maybach name to show the longest S-Class was focused as a chauffeur-driven car, with another 200mm being added over the long-wheelbase S-Class.

"It won't be priced against a Rolls-Royce but technically it will be the better car."

He said the S-Class Maybach would stand out from other S-Class models not so much on technology but quality of materials and features.

Mercedes’ parent company Daimler re-introduced the Maybach brand in 2002 after missing out to Volkswagen and BMW respectively on the Bentley or Rolls-Royce British luxury brands.

Dr Storp said a station wagon or a convertible were other options to complete the line-up of the S-Class range.

Mercedes insiders have told CarAdvice the convertible will happen. It will be inspired by the four-door drop-top Ocean Drive concept of 2007 (pictured below), though Dr Storp said if the S-Class Convertible were to go into production it would be different.

“Ocean Drive was one discussion we showed [to the public]. Many people were affected by this idea,” he said.

“If we were to develop a convertible it can’t be in such a big size. It would be in S-Class basis… [and] two doors [not four doors].”
