During track testings for the newly released GT-R SpecV, Mr Mizuno explained that a more powerful, performance-honed GT-R is in development for release to the public.
Mr Mizuno alluded that the SpecV is “not the high-performance version of the GT-R”, but more of a fine-tuned, handling-spec model for the GT-R range.
The car industry rumour-mill has begun to churn out ideas that this ‘high-performance’ monster in question could well be a homologation street version of the FIA GT1 race car, pushing the performance bracket to as high as 442kW and 685Nm.
Other industry figures are suggesting that it points towards a revival of the ‘LM’ -Le Mans - badge, also indicating a very strong emphasis on high performance.
Either way, if history and reputation is anything to go by, a ‘high-performance’ GT-R is going to be very much that - HIGH performance!
This isn’t the only spin-off suggested for the iconic giant-slayer, an ‘M-Spec’ version, with emphasis on luxury and comfort along sport performance, is also rumoured to be on it’s way.
The SpecV, Nissan’s most hardcore official GT-R so far, only has a small increase in power over the stock GT-R, but a stringent diet of carbon-fibre and other exotic materials makes for a 60kg drop in weight.
Uprated Bilstein suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, revised exhaust and aerodynamic tweaks make the SpecV much leaner and meaner than the ‘stock’ GT-R – think stock BMW M3 to M3 CSL.
Mr Mizuno is making another assault on the Nurburgring with his new SpecV as well.
His target, the Chevrolet Corvette’s record time of seven minutes and 26 seconds.
Despite some controversy, the GT-R’s first attempt on the Nurburgring was somewhat close to devastating, clinching a symbolic win over the icnonic 911 GT2's time of 7:32.
So, whilst turning up the heat with the SpecV, and alluding to something more potent on the horizon, the Nissan GT-R party seems to have only just begun.
With Porsche beginning testing on the new 998 series 911 GT2, GT3 and Turbo, Nissan has certainly got a fight on it’s handsand with war waged on the Nurburgring, there is plenty at stake on the showroom floor.
