Speaking at the local launch of the all-new Golf wagon, Volkswagen Australia communications general manager Karl Gehling told CarAdvice that while production was expected to begin soon, the sub-compact Taigun was "not something that we’re considering".
At 3995mm long (including its tailgate-mounted spare wheel), 1728mm wide, 1570mm high, and riding on a wheelbase 63mm longer than an Up!, Gehling said the Taigun, which is 250mm stubbier, 37mm narrower and has a 138mm lower roofline than the Ford EcoSport, was too small to interest local buyers.
“We don’t see that there’s demand for that small an SUV in this market, so it’s not something we’re considering,” Gehling said.
First seen as a concept car at the 2012 Sao Paulo motor show and again in revised form earlier this month at the 2014 Delhi auto show (pictured), the 998kg Volkswagen Taigun teams an 81kW/175Nm turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine with a six-speed manual transmission.
Featuring 17-inch alloy wheels and a 280-litre boot capacity (expandable to 996L with the rear seats folded down), the Taigun is set to go on sale in overseas markets by 2015.
