Jeep Cherokee : 2.0-litre diesel engine joins new SUV range

The all-new Jeep Cherokee will make its European premiere at next month's Geneva motor show, debuting two tunes of a new diesel engine.

Launched in the US in October last year, the Jeep Cherokee will employ a new Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine when it launches in Europe in the second quarter of 2014.

The engine produces 104kW of power in six-speed manual spec and 127kW when paired with the nine-speed automatic transmission. Both produce 350Nm of torque.

Jeep says both versions will feature stop-start engine technology and will be offered in either front-wheel-drive or four-wheel drive with rear-axle disconnect.

The European Jeep Cherokee line-up will also include the 199kW/316Nm 3.2-litre petrol-powered V6 Pentastar engine. Russia and the Middle East will additionally gain the 137kW/232Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder Tigershark petrol engine.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee launches locally in June, with a sub-$30,000 starting price anticipated to help the mid-size SUV tackle the likes of the Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5.

Fiat Chrysler Group Australia will offer both petrol engines alongside the diesel in the new Cherokee range.

The 2014 Geneva motor show begins on March 4.
