Mercedes-Benz Citan ruled out for Australia

The Mercedes-Benz Citan compact commercial van will not be sold in Australia after all.

The German brand had been mulling over plans to offer the Citan van - a spin-off version of the Renault Kangoo delivery model - in Australia for the past twelve months - but those plans have now been put on ice.

However, according to Mercedes-Benz Australia's senior manager of public relations, product and corporate communications, David McCarthy, the lack of a diesel automatic drivetrain meant the car wouldn't be suited to the majority of local buyers.

"We still haven't been able to secure the specification for the Citan that we wanted," McCarthy said. "As such, we won't be bringing the vehicle to Australia."

The Citan made headlines in 2013 when it scored just three stars in a EuroNCAP crash test. Amendments were made to the model, including a seatbelt warning system update, and it has since managed a four-star score in a retest.

The three-star score was believed to be a limiting factor in the Citan's chances of being offered locally, while the four-star result was considered more palatable. However, it was the engine and transmission combinations - or lack thereof - that ruled the Citan out.

"The issue for us has pretty much always been the specification. Unless a diesel-auto combination eventuates for the current-generation of the Citan, we won't be offering it," McCarthy said.
