Audi A3 sedan : pricing and specifications

The Audi A3 sedan has become the cheapest premium four-door in the country, launching with a sub-$40,000 starting price that undercuts German rival, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, by more than $10,000.

The all-new A3 sedan range largely mirrors that of the A3 Sportback that arrived in Australia in May (minus the hatch's base diesel), with four direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine variants and two trim levels ranging up to $47,800.

At $39,800, the entry-level Audi A3 1.4 TFSI COD Attraction sedan costs $1900 more than its equivalent hatchback, and $3200 more than the base Sportback. Its petrol engine – equipped with cylinder-on-demand technology – produces 103kW and 250Nm, claims combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.7 litres per 100km and 0-100km/h acceleration of 8.4 seconds.

Until the arrival of the 206kW Audi S3 sedan in April, the top performing petrol-powered A3 sedan is the 1.8 TFSI Ambition. The 1.8-litre engine produces 132kW and 250Nm in $44,800 front-wheel-drive configuration, and an additional 30Nm (280Nm in total) in current range-topping $47,800 quattro all-wheel-drive trim. The quattro is half a second quicker to triple figures (6.8sec versus 7.3), though the 100kg-lighter front-wheel drive claims to be 15 per cent more fuel efficient (5.6L/100km versus 6.6).

The sole diesel in the Audi A3 sedan range is the 2.0 TDI Ambition variant, which produces 110kW and 320Nm from its 2.0-litre engine, claims combined consumption of 4.1L/100km and 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds.

All engines are paired with S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmissions, with six speeds for the 1.8 TFSI quattro and 2.0 TDI and seven for the 1.4 TFSI COD and 1.8 TFSI front-wheel drive.

Standard features of the Audi A3 Attraction grade include 17-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, auto headlights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, steering wheel paddleshifters, leather upholstery, a 5.8-inch display screen and an eight-speaker sound system with SDHC card reader, USB input and Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio streaming.

The Attraction grade gains aluminium exterior and interior highlights, Audi drive select system, colour instrument cluster display, sports steering wheel and front sports seats.

Five option packages can be selected to equip the A3 sedan further.

The $1800 Assistance pack includes adaptive cruise control, Audi pre sense, lane departure warning, high beam assist and side assist.

The $2000 Style pack adds xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, sports suspension and a choice of two 18-inch alloy wheel designs.

The $2200 Comfort pack features electric heated front seats with electric lumbar adjustment, smart key, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and auto-folding side mirrors.

The $2990 Technik pack adds MMI navigation plus with MMI Touch controller, driver information system, rear-view camera, and an upgraded 10-speaker audio system.

Available exclusively with the Ambition grade, the S line sport pack includes exterior body kit, Alcantara/leather sports seats with S line embossing, flat-bottom perforated-leather steering wheel with paddleshifters, black headliner, brushed aluminium inlays, xenon plus headlights with LED DRLs and sports suspension, and costs $4200 with 18-inch alloy wheels and $5200 with 19s.
