Land Rover files ‘Landy’ trademark application

Land Rover has filed to trademark the name 'Landy', igniting speculation that the iconic British manufacturer is planning to launch a compact urban SUV.

Autocar reports Jaguar Land Rover lodged the application in December, though acknowledges that the trademark category covers both vehicles and accessories, including model cars, clothing and dealership franchising, suggesting the Landy badge may not necessarily appear on a future production model.

Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern told CarAdvice at last year’s New York auto show that he had “drawn everything” in terms of different vehicle designs, while the car maker’s director of programs, Murray Dietsch, admitted the premium compact SUV segment was lucrative, albeit challenging, for the brand.

“I think there is relevance in smaller products,” Dietsch said, “it’s just whether we can get it to really make a good business sense, that’s always the challenge.

“Sure the volume’s there, but you’ve got to make sure you’re not chasing something that you’ll never be able to deliver a business return on, so it’s a bit of a balance.”

The premium compact SUV segment is one of the fastest-growing in the world, with the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class soon to join the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. Audi has also confirmed its intention to launch the sub-compact Q1 in 2016.

Land Rover global band director John Edwards admitted the growth of the compact SUV segment made it an attractive prospect, but said introducing a sub-Evoque model was not a priority at this stage.

“Could we [build a smaller model]? Of course we could. But there are no plans right now,” Edwards said.
