Fiat 500L under serious consideration for Australia

The Fiat 500L is under serious consideration for the Australian market as Fiat looks to further expand its local model line-up following a year that's seen the brand's sales grow by almost 600 percent.

The Fiat 500L will likely head to Australia in 2015 after the standard 500 range gets updated around the middle of next year. Fiat Australia will have to wait until the 500L also gets the update before bringing the car here.

The 500L is a larger version of the 500, measuring 4140mm long, 1780mm wide and 1660mm tall, making it 594mm longer than the standard 500, as well as a slightly wider and taller.

Fiat Chrysler Group Australiadirector of corporate affairs Karla Leach told CarAdvice the 500L will likely sit between $25,000-$30,000, offering a cheaper alternative to the Mini Clubman.

Based on the North American wide version of the GM Fiat Small platform, the Fiat 500L is available overseas with two tunes of a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as well a 1.3- and 1.6-litre turbo-diesels.

With the car still unconfirmed for our market, engine and specification details are yet to be finalised, though the 1.4-litre engine seems an obvious inclusion.

The arrival of the Fiat 500L will almost certainly be followed by the even larger seven-seat 500XL.

There’s also potential for the Fiat 500L to be sourced from the Mexican plant given the North American market’s decision to equip its vehicle with a dual-clutch automatic transmission rather than the robotised-manual automatic system currently available from Europe.
