North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year finalists announced

The finalists for the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year awards have been announced, with the list whittled down to three competitors in each category.

Half of the finalists are General Motors products, while Chrysler, Acura and Mazda also managed to crack the list.

In the car category, the Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Mazda 3 will compete to be crowned the ‘North American Car of the Year’. The Acura MDX, Chevrolet Silverado and Jeep Cherokee will vie for gold in the truck/utility category.

The lists have been reduced from the twelve finalists announced for each category last October, when a much larger proportion of cars bound for Australia were in contention.

The BMW 4 Series, Infiniti Q50, Jaguar F-Type, Lexus IS, Mazda 6, Mercedes-Benz CLA and Toyota Corolla all failed to make the final round in the car category, while the BMW X5, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Range Rover Sport and Subaru Forester were also knocked out of the running in the ute/SUV segment.

The winner is set to be decided by a jury of 48 journalists, and will be announced at the North American International auto show on January 13.
