Audi Q1: coupe concept sketches preview future SUV

A new coupe-style crossover concept will give an early insight into the design of the recently confirmed Audi Q1 SUV when it debuts at next month's Detroit auto show.

The unnamed Audi two-door concept measures 4.2 metres from nose to tail, making it 185mm longer than the Q3, which is currently the smallest SUV in the luxury German brand's range.

Audi says the “shooting brake” concept combines styling elements from future production sports cars with trademark features of the car maker’s off-road-themed ‘allroad’ models.

The concept’s short overhangs, long bonnet, heavily raked windscreen, shallow glasshouse and low roofline are signature sports car, while its raised ride height, flared wheel arches containing 19-inch alloys, grey plastic lower panel edging and front and rear aluminium underbody guards complete the capable crossover look.

The concept teams the car maker’s ‘quattro’ all-wheel-drive system with an ‘e-tron’ drivetrain, believed to be a plug-in hybrid system rather than a pure-electric powertrain.

Audi will produce the subcompact Q1 crossover from 2016, slotting beneath the Q3, Q5 and Q7 in its SUV line-up.

The Q1 will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s versatile MQB platform and will be closely related to the next-generation versions of the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Polo city cars.

The 2014 Detroit auto show kicks off on January 13.
