Toyota 86 sedan approved for production?

A sedan version of the Toyota 86 has been rumoured since 2010 but has reportedly been given the green light for production.

UK publication Auto Express quotes "an inside source" who claims a new Toyota 86-based sedan has been given the nod to join the two-door in global showrooms.

Said to sit on a 100mm-stretched version of the standard 86 coupe platform, the report suggests the new four-door will have a unique grille design and incorporate technology seen in the 313kW Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R concept.

Teamed with the existing 147kW/205Nm naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, the hybrid system will reportedly incorporate regenerative braking technology and reduce fuel economy by 10 to 15 per cent – dropping consumption down to 6.6-7.0L/100km.

Though the report anticipates a late-2015 launch for the Toyota 86 sedan, Toyota Australia said it had no confirmation of the variant from Japan.
