Angry Birds hits the track in new mobile racing app

The Angry Birds mobile gaming phenomenon is expanding into the world of racing with a new spin-off game due to launch in December.

Dubbed Angry Birds Go! and featuring the franchises now well-known bird and pig characters, the new game focuses around "high-octane downhill racing" set on a 3D Piggy Island.

With side-by-side racing, upgradable karts, and characters with “awesome” special powers, the game clearly owes much to the granddaddy of the genre, Nintendo's Mario Kart.

Created by Finnish game developer Rovio Entertainment, Angry Birds first broke onto the world stage in 2009.

While a first as far as the game is concerned, Angry Birds Go! isn’t the franchise’s first experience with racing, previously sponsoring Finnish Formula One drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Kimi Raikkonen.

Angry Birds Go! is set to start reaching iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices from December 11.
