Car sales September 2013: Winners and losers

The Toyota Corolla has tightened its grip on the title of Australia's favourite new car for 2013 after another strong sales performance in September.

The Corolla stretched its lead over the 2011/2012 sales champ, the Mazda 3, to 1258 units heading into the final three months of the year.

Claiming the 2013 crown now appears a certainty for the Corolla, with the compact Mazda now deep in run-out mode ahead of the launch of the third-generation small car in January.

The HiLux secured another quinella for Toyota in September with 3341 sales, and now threatens to bump the Mazda to third place for the year, trailing it by just 864 sales.

The new Holden VF Commodore continues to sell in strong numbers, maintaining fourth position in September ahead of the Hyundai i30 small car. The Commodore looks set to overtake its Elizabeth assembly line partner, the Cruze, next month, with the large car outselling the smaller model by more than 1000 units last month to narrow the gap to just 384 vehicles for 2013 to date.

Utes were strong in September, with the Nissan Navara and Ford Ranger locking down sixth and eighth positions respectively, the latter now moving inside the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the country in 2013.

The new Volkswagen Golf also enjoyed the best month of its short life, claiming ninth position overall ahead of the Cruze.

The Ford Falcon rebounded from its worst month on record, with sales increasing 47.6 per cent over August to 846 units. Territory sales also climbed 35.4 per cent from last month to 1130. The picture remains bleak for both nameplates, however, with overall 2013 sales down 31.4 and 7.1 per cent respectively.

Toyota Camry sales are largely steady with last year’s figures (down 2.5 per cent), while the Aurion is down a more significant 21.9 per cent, with just 4587 units sold so far in 2013.

September’s top three brands – Toyota, Holden, Hyundai – were the only three inside the top 10 to experience sales growth over the same month in 2012. Mazda and Nissan were among the biggest losers; their sales contracting by around 25 per cent in a market that softened 2.1 per cent overall to 92,662 sales.

The Hyundai i20 (1566) dominated the city car class ahead of the Toyota Yaris (1142) and Mazda2 (1113).

The next best small cars after the five inside the top 10 included the Ford Focus (1642) and the Mitsubishi Lancer (1412), while the Mazda 6 (563), BMW 3 Series (440) and Mercedes-Benz C-Class (385) trailed the Camry in the medium segment.

The Hyundai ix35 (1667) took a dominant 30.3 per cent share of the small SUV segment ahead of the Mitsubishi ASX (846) and Subaru XV (725), while the Mazda CX-5 (1670) pipped the Toyota RAV4 (1508) in the medium class and the Jeep Grand Cherokee (1402) held off the Toyota Prado (1133) and the Territory in the large segment.

The Ranger (512) and Holden Utility (508) fought a tight battle for second behind the HiLux (859) in the 4x2 ute class, while the HiLux 4x4 (2482) was again untouchable in the 4WD ute segment over the Navara (2155) and Ranger (1525).
