BMW X1: next-gen front-wheel-drive crossover spied

The next-generation BMW X1 has been spotted on the back of a transporter in Germany, giving us our best look yet at the future front-wheel-drive model.

Codenamed F48, the all-new BMW X1 was snapped by CarAdvice's photographers while being transported between two German test facilities.

Wrapped in camouflage with only the air intakes and temporary headlights and tail-lights peering out, the new X1 will be available as a front- or four-wheel-drive proposition rather than its current rear- or four-wheel-drive layouts.

To be based on the same front-drive 'UKL1' platform that will underpin the upcoming BMW 1 Series GT and the next Mini Cooper, the X1 is expected to offer more space than the current car and at reduced production costs.

The new model will again feature a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and is also expected to be offered with an entry-level turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder. A hybrid drivetrain seen in the likes of the BMW Concept Active Tourer and Active Tourer Outdoor also has potential to power the new compact SUV.

The third-generation BMW X1 is expected to debut in 2015 with global sales to follow into 2016.

The X1 first launched at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show.
