Opel Adam OPC: potential performance mini spied

A performance prototype based on the Opel Adam has been spied testing in Germany, hinting at plans for a more spirited version of the city car.

Snapped by CarAdvice's spy photographers, the Opel Adam has a slightly revised front bumper with an additional central air intake seen behind the number plate, five-stud rather than four-stud wheels and blue Corsa OPC-like brake calipers.

The two-door also has wider flared guards and appears to be sitting closer to the ground suggesting the employment of sportier suspension.

Rumours are mixed, however, as to whether the test car is a genuine OPC model, or simply an uprated version propelled by the German manufacturer’s recently announced 85kW/166Nm turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder.

Currently in Europe, the most powerful Adam scores a 74kW 1.4-litre four-cylinder mated to a five-speed manual transmission. And the entry point into the Opel Performance Centre (OPC) range is the 141kW/260Nm turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder-powered Corsa OPC – sitting below the Astra and Insignia variants.

Missing out on OPC trademarks such as triangular air intakes, exhaust tips and a larger rear spoiler, the prototype could well be a new Adam Sport or GSi model, aimed to sit below any future OPC variant – following in the footsteps of former Corsa models.

Opel already has a strong sporting background with the little Adam – a car that measures 1mm longer than a Mini hatch and 37mm wider – with the Opel Adam R2 and Opel Adam Cup cars used in rallying across Europe.
