Speculation was rife that the Hybrid R concept would preview
the fruit of Toyota’s partnership with BMW, possibly a successor to the
mid-sized Supra sports car, after the Japanese manufacturer released an image of the car's badge last week.
But the new image - visible in greater detail courtesy of some digital brightening by Autocar - reveals a modified version of the Toyota Yaris, supporting subsequent reports that the Hybrid R would be based on an existing production model.
Befitting of the racy Hybrid R badge, the concept is set to be far from a regular Yaris. Autocar reports that in place of that car’s usual engines, producing up to 80kW, the concept will sport a 295kW hybrid powertrain featuring technology from Toyota’s entrant into the Le Mans 24 Hours race.
Official details of the Toyota Hybrid R concept will be revealed when the petrol-electric pocket rocket debuts at the Frankfurt motor show on September 10.
