Range Rover Sport takes on Spitfire in off-road British battle

The car versus plane concept is not a new one, but an off-road race between a new Range Rover Sport and an iconic Spitfire makes for a uniquely British battle.


The Gaydon-based manufacturer lined up the new Range Rover Sport – the fastest Land Rover in history, and headed our way in November – alongside England’s most famous fighter aircraft on the grass airstrip at the Goodwood Aerodrome in Sussex for the challenge.

Jaguar Land Rover chief vehicle integrity engineer Mike Cross was charged with the task of hauling the 375kW/625Nm 5.0-litre supercharged V8 Range Rover Sport up and down the notoriously slippery and undulating airstrip, while Boultbee Flight Academy pilot Matt Jones took to the sky in the 1305kW V12-powered Vickers Supermarine Spitfire.
