Saleen 351 Mustang: 522kW pony car revealed

American high-performance vehicle manufacturer Saleen Automotive has officially unveiled its latest offering: the Saleen 351 Mustang.

Armed with a 5.75-litre (351 cubic inch) supercharged V8 that makes 522kW and a ground-pounding 887Nm of torque, the 2014 Saleen 351 Mustang is the company’s most extreme Mustang to date.

The engine itself features forged aluminium pistons, high-performance valve springs and new fuel injectors and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. There’s also a high-performance clutch with a lightweight flywheel.

On the handling side, Saleen adds a sports suspension package that includes new shocks, springs, struts and stabiliser bars.

“The amount of detail that we had to put into this vehicle is astounding," said company founder Steve Saleen. “I feel our team has struck the perfect balance of design, technology, and [of course] power.”

The new model also gets revised side skirts and a “Red Butterfly” ram air hood, rear diffuser, a rear spoiler and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Available in both hardtop and convertible body styles, the Saleen 351 Mustang is priced from US$82,600 (circa-$90,000).

Saleen Automotive recently announced it had finalised a merger with Steve Saleen’s latest SMS Signature Cars project.

The company also revealed that it had acquired $3 million in fresh investment that would go to fund a new generation of supercars, as well as electric cars.
