Toyota Prius sales pass 3 million mark

Toyota Motor Corporation is celebrating another milestone with global sales of the Toyota Prius surpassing the 3 million-vehicle mark almost 16 years after the model first launched.

Spread across the expanded Toyota Prius range, inclusive of the Pruis C city car and Prius V people mover, the Japanese manufacturer announced that 3.8 million vehicles have now been sold globally.

Toyota Australia says that while more than 18,300 Prius have been sold locally since the hyrbid’s October 2001 launch, the 3 million global figure has been achieved by shifting more than 1.3 million units in North America, an identical number in Japan, 260,000 in Europe and almost 80,000 across the rest of the world.

Combined with hybrid models from Lexus, TMC has recorded hybrid sales in excess of 5.3 million units, highlighted in 2012 by the car maker selling more than one million hybrids in year for the first time.

First launched in Japan in 1997, sales of the Prius reached the 1 million mark in 2008 and ticked over 2 million units in September 2010.

Locally, the Toyota Prius was recently usurped by the Toyota Camry Hybrid as the brand's best-selling hybrid vehicle.
