Drayson Racing EV sets 328km/h land speed record

An all-electric Le Mans Prototype racer has set a new world electric land speed record by achieving an average speed of 204.185mph (328.60km/h).

The Drayson Racing B12 69/EV electric Le Mans Prototype driven by Lord Drayson broke the previous record, set almost 39 years ago on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, by 29.267mph (47.10km/h).

While still officially subject to final confirmation by motorsport’s governing body the FIA – and announced by an official in the clip as a slightly slower 204.1580mph – the record was set after Dayson’s first run down the Elvington Airfield in England registered a top speed of 203.75mph (327.90km/h) and the second 204.62mph (329.30km/h).

Drayson was delighted with the record, saying it showed the world that EVs can be fast and reliable.

"It is not the outright speed of 204.185mph that is most impressive about this record, but the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1000kg electric vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile,” he said.

“This is the future: electric.”

The team already has its sights set on its next challenge of setting a new EV acceleration record.
