Volkswagen Australia faces loss of acceleration claims from owners

Volkswagen Australia has no plans to recall any of its vehicles despite a growing number of reports of owners experiencing a loss of acceleration.

A coronial investigation into the death of a Volkswagen Golf driver on Melbourne's Monash Freeway in 2011 has this week ignited complaints from more than a dozen owners claiming to have experienced similar faults with their cars.

Melissa Ryan, 32, was killed two years ago when her Golf was struck from behind by a truck. The truck driver and Ryan’s family claimed her car slowed drastically for no obvious reason. The truck driver claims not to have seen any brake lights from the car despite its rapid deceleration.

Fairfax media reports at least 15 owners of Volkswagen Golf, Polo, Eos and Passat vehicles have come forward with stories of their cars losing power, placing them in potentially hazardous positions on the road.

In a statement, Volkswagen Australia said it has no current plan to announce a recall given there has been no formal investigation conducted, nor ruling passed down, by the relevant government authority.

“At this time we do not plan to announce a recall. Any recalls are conducted in accordance with the consumer product safety recall guidelines issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC),” the company said, as reported by ABC Online.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport, the authority that relates vehicle recall information to the ACCC, has confirmed to the media that it is “liaising closely with Volkswagen Australia” on the matter.
