Audi Q8 to rival Range Rover Sport: report

An Audi Q8 designed to take on the Range Rover Sport is reportedly headed for production, according to the research and development boss of the German luxury brand.

UK publication Autocar quotes Audi technical development chief Wolfgang Durheimer, who confirmed the company's interest in growing its future SUV line-up beyond the Q7.

“We can go bigger than we have with the Q7, and we can all see that this sector is growing,” Durheimer said.

“Audi has the biggest SUV in the group, and I don’t see any reason to change that.”

Autocar reports the full-size Q8 SUV will boast a coupe-inspired sloping roofline and feature technology on par with the Audi A8 limousine.

The Audi Q8 will reportedly sit on an extended version of the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform destined for the second-generation Q7, Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and future SUVs from Lamborghini and Bentley.

Audi’s next-generation Q-series SUV family is set to draw styling inspiration from the Audi Crosslane Coupe concept, which debuted at last year’s Paris motor show with bold lines and sharp angles across its body.
