Mitsubishi G4 concept previews new compact sedan

The Mitsubishi G4 concept is headed for this week's Shanghai auto show where it will preview the Japanese manufacturer's next-generation compact sedan.

The Shanghai show represents the first time the concept has been shown outside its domestic Thai market following its low-key unveiling in Bangkok, emphasising the global nature of the upcoming production car.

The Mitsubishi G4 concept (‘global four-door’) will be built alongside the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback in Thailand and sold around the world, forming a two-pronged city-car partnership to rival the likes of fellow Japan-based car makers Honda (Jazz and City) and Nissan (Micra and Almera).

The production model is set to be revealed later this year, and while it’s not confirmed for our market at this stage, Mitsubishi Australia says it will introduce the new sedan if it is made available to our market, which is likely to occur during 2014.

While the blue grille and lamp details won’t graduate from concept to production, the G4 otherwise gives us a very clear look at what to expect when it reaches showrooms. Design highlights include an upright hexagonal grille, broad headlights, a long wheelbase that is claimed to offer the most spacious interior in its class, and dynamic character lines that kick up towards the rear.

Mitsubishi says the production car will also have the lightest body in its class thanks to its use of high-tensile steel, and is targeting leading fuel efficiency with its 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) combination shared with the Mirage.
