Volkswagen e-Co-Motion concept: electric van sketched

Expected to preview the design language of Volkswagen’s future light-commercial vehicle family, the e-Co-Motion concept gives an insight into its vision for delivery vehicles, combining a pure-electric drivetrain with a versatile architecture intended to meet a wide range of customer requirements.

The Volkswagen e-Co-Motion sits on a platform independent from the German manufacturer’s existing van line-up. The drive unit, gearbox and battery are contained beneath the floor allowing for maximum load space utilisation and a number of body styles, including the van layout of the concept as well as a passenger shuttle, a refrigerated box, and many more.

At 4550mm long, 1900mm wide and 1960mm tall, the e-Co-Motion is more than a foot shorter than the entry-level Volkswagen Transporter, yet offers a 4.6-cubic-metre cargo capacity and an 800kg payload.

Volkswagen says the e-Co-Motion concept also promises high manoeuvrability, good visibility, a low cargo floor and easy entry, exit and walk-through.

Volkswagen board member Dr Eckhard Scholz believes electric vans have an important role to play in the future of transportation.

“Freight trains and conventional or hybrid-powered high-capacity lorries would deliver goods up to the city limits," Scholz said.

Then, at transfer stations, smaller electric delivery vans would take over. Their predictable travel routes and fixed depots would simplify battery charging and equipment maintenance.”

The e-Co-Motion will be unveiled in Geneva on March 5.
