Porsche 911 Carrera, Carrera 4 recall: 2200 US cars risk exhaust fault

More than 2200 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 models have been recalled in the US over an issue with the sports cars' exhaust pipes.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 2263 Porsche 911 Carrera and all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models, manufactured between March 7, 2012 and November 12, 2012, fitted with the standard exhaust system, are at risk of having the exhaust pipe fracture and separate from the rear muffler.

According to the official NHTSA recall notice, “If the exhaust tailpipe separates from the muffler it may become a hazard for other vehicles on the road, increasing the risk of a crash”. The fix for the affected cars is a replacement of the rear mufflers, at no cost to owners.

Porsche Australia’s Stephanie Schmidt told CarAdvice the local division was waiting on more information on the recall from its German headquarters, which was requested this week.

In December last year, 36 Porsche 997 911 GT3 models fitted with centre-locking wheels were recalled over an issue relating to the rear wheel hubs and bearings, while in July 2012, four $443,600 Porsche Panamera Turbo S models were recalled due to a turbocharger fault that risked engine bay fires. In March of the same year 1459 Porsche Cayenne models were recalled to repair a headlight defect.
