Honda MDX: next-gen SUV headed for Detroit

Acura, the US luxury division of Honda, will unveil a prototype of the next-generation Honda MDX at next year's 2013 Detroit motor show in January, marking the popular SUV's return to the world stage.

The announcement, joined by a teaser image of the new third-generation Honda MDX concept, comes less than a month after CarAdvice exclusively revealed that the new model is likely to reach Australian shores inside of two years.

Acura says the 2014 MDX’s form and function utilise the brand's "Aero Sculpture" design language featuring "alluring proportions with smooth, arching body lines matched to an efficient architecture".

The sole image shows an upright grille and swooping headlights sitting above a deep chiselled front bumper, a smooth canopy and elegantly flared guards.

While no powertrain line-up has been confirmed at this stage, the new seven-seat MDX could be propelled by a petrol-electric drivetrain giving Honda a direct rival for the Lexus RX450h SUV.

The MDX concept will join the recently teased Honda Jazz-based Urban SUV concept at the North American international auto show, which runs from January 14 to 27 in Detroit, Michigan.
