The 300 Japan-only wagon and sedan models have been extensively modified by Subaru's in-house tuning specialist Subaru Tecnica International, providing buyers with an exclusive vehicle with genuine performance benefits.
Both the STI Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon and STI Legacy B4 sedan receive Bilstein shocks, STI springs, an STI strut tower brace, and an STI sports exhaust to extract the best out of the shared horizontally opposed 2.5-litre ‘boxer’ four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Exterior treatments include an STI rear spoiler, STI front under spoiler, STI badging and 18-inch STI alloy wheels, while inside a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-wrapped shift knob, front seats, engine start button, and 260km/h speedo are all stamped with STI branding.
Despite the success Subaru Australia had with 250 limited edition 'Tuned by STI' Subaru Liberty GTs in 2008, national corporate affairs manager David Rowley told CarAdvice the models were not on the agenda at this stage.
“We don’t have any plans, but I wouldn’t rule it out,” he said. “There’s always the possibility.”
The Japanese release of the STI Legacy Touring Wagon and STI Legacy B4 sedan coincided with the domestic release of the all-new Subaru Forester, a car Australia will definitely see when it launches locally in early 2013.
