Sydney Motorsport Park Drift Festival coming in January

Sydney Motorsport Park will be filled with smoke and the sound of screeching tyres when the track's redeveloped South Circuit hosts its inaugural drift meeting in January 2013.

With 150 entries, including some of the country's best master sliders, as well as special guests, trade stands and music, the Sydney Motorsport Park Drift Festival will light up the circuit, formerly known as Eastern Creek Raceway, on January 26, 2013 for almost 12 hours.

Taking advantage of the new South Circuit, competitors will also get to practice their sideways skills on the Skidpan and Figure-8 tracks, before the Australian Drifting Grand Prix (ADGP) Top-16 invitational exhibition competition begins at 6pm, running in twilight.

ADGP manager Andrew Hawkins said preliminary testing of Sydney Motorsport Park’s South Circuit revealed it to be one of the most suited and enjoyable tracks in Australia for drifting.

“It's all about celebrating the sport of drifting,” he said. “We are very excited to be part of this historic moment.”

Local motorsport enthusiasts look like being spoiled for choice early next year with the Sydney Motorsport Park Drift Festival in January preceding the arrival of the Top Gear Festival Sydney in March, itself taking place only one week before Melbourne’s 2013 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
