Jeep airbag recall: over 900,000 SUVs affected worldwide
Chrysler is recalling over 900,000 Jeep SUVs across the globe due to an airbag fault that could result in the airbags being inadvertently deployed.
Reuters reports that 919,545 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty SUVs from 2002 to 2004 require checks to fix a faulty part in the cars' airbag control module.
According to the report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the failure of the airbag module part could result in either the front or side curtain airbags being deployed inadvertently while the vehicles are in operation, risking potential injury or accident.
The Jeep recall includes 744,822 SUVs in the US, 49,430 in Canada, 21,828 in Mexico, and 103,465 outside North America at roughly a 50:50 split between the two models.
While in the US there have been 215 reported cases of inadvertent airbag deployment and 81 cases of minor injuries, Fiat Chrysler Australia’s director of corporate affairs, Lenore Fletcher, told CarAdvice she was not aware of any similar incidents in Australia, but confirmed around 7300 vehicles would be recalled locally.
Vehicles affected in Australia include 2002-2004 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2002-2003 Jeep Cherokees (the Jeep Liberty in the US).
The fix is estimated to take an hour with Chrysler dealers installing a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module at no cost to owners.
