2013 Ford Mondeo makes Australian debut

The 2013 Ford Mondeo has gone on display at the 2012 Sydney motor show, more than a year before the model is set to go on sale locally.

It joins the EcoSport baby SUV and Kuga mid-size SUV as a showcase for Ford Australia’s fresh range of models heading down under for 2013.

The Mondeo featured on Ford Australia’s show stand is actually a rebadged version of the Ford Fusion (pictured below) – the North Amercian market’s near-identical twin to the Mondeo (main image) that will be sold in markets such as Europe and Australia.

The Mondeo/Fusion medium car becomes a single model worldwide for the first time as part of Ford’s One Ford strategy, which sees the Blue Oval saving design and development costs by producing one model per segment globally.

It sits on Ford’s new CD platform, which is likely to underpin Ford’s next large car, the Taurus, which is due in 2015.

The new-generation mid-sizer adopts Ford’s latest design DNA that links the styling of all the company’s current models.

Ford’s voice-activated infotainment Sync system will be incorporated, while a safety hightlight will be rear inflatable seatbelts.

Ford Australia doesn’t expect to get the fifth-generation Ford Mondeo until the first half of 2014 despite the Fusion having already gone on sale in the US and the European-version Mondeo due in European showrooms in the second half of 2013.

Delays at the Ford Mondeo production plant in Belgium are being blamed.
