Peugeot Onyx concept: new sports coupe teased

The Peugeot Onyx, which evolves the coupe styling of the 2010 Peugeot SR1 concept with sharper angles and more aggressive lines, provides an insight into the French manufacturer’s future sports car design.

The concept is expected to influence the next-generation Peugeot RCZ and potentially an all-new two-door model with even greater performance ability.

Peugeot has revealed no details about the Onyx concept at this stage, although the short video clip and shadowy teaser image give us hints about the vehicle’s design.

Piercing double-scalloped LED headlights border an elegant grille opening, while LED running light streaks flank a large lower air intake, emphasising the car’s low, wide front-end.

The vertical tail-lights sit at the rear corners, wrapping around in boomerang fashion, somewhat reminiscent of the Citroen C6 limousine and the original Lamborghini Gallardo supercar.

Between them is a broad active spoiler, which can either tuck away to retain the Onyx’s clean lines or deploy to increase downforce and enhance its aerodynamic performance.

A series of gills sit over the boot lid, potentially implying the presence of some rear-mounted powertrain componentry. The SR1 concept utilised a version of the manufacturer’s Hybrid4 propulsion system, teaming a front-mounted 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor on the rear axle.

The teaser video also highlights the use of carbonfibre across the exterior, promising to a lightweight package, aiding performance and agility.

More details on the Peugeot Onyx concept will be revealed in the lead-up to the sports car’s unveiling in Paris on September 29.
